The Formula (How It Works)

Aerodynamic drag force grows with the square of speed, so the horsepower needed to overcome it grows with the cube of speed. Doubling your speed takes roughly eight times the aero horsepower.

F_drag (lbf) = 0.5 × ρ × Cd × A × V²

HP_aero = (F_drag × V) ÷ 550

F_roll (lbf) = Crr × Weight × cos(θ)

HP_roll = (F_roll × V) ÷ 550

HP_engine = (HP_aero + HP_roll + HP_grade) ÷ (1 − drivetrain loss)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is aerodynamic horsepower?

It is the portion of engine power consumed purely by pushing air out of the vehicle's path. It scales with the cube of speed, which is why top speed is so expensive to raise.

Is this calculator accurate?

It uses the exact steady-state physics equations plus real air-density correction for temperature, pressure and elevation. Given accurate Cd, frontal area and Crr, results match wind-tunnel and coast-down data closely.

What is the difference between wheel HP and engine HP?

Wheel horsepower is what reaches the pavement. Engine (crank) horsepower is higher because the transmission, driveshaft and differential absorb roughly 10–15% on a manual and 15–20% on many automatics and AWD systems.

How do I find my frontal area?

Multiply overall height by overall width in feet, then multiply by about 0.85 to account for the rounded shape. Most US sedans land near 22–24 sq ft; full-size pickups near 32–35 sq ft.

Does a headwind really matter that much?

Yes. A 15 mph headwind at 70 mph makes the car behave aerodynamically as if it were traveling 85 mph, which raises aero horsepower by roughly 80%.
